  Beautiful Onsen ryokan with private garden and bath

  Tendo area, Yamagata prefecture, (2 1/2 hours Shinkansen from Tokyo) is so impressive with the changes of colors. This rural mountainous area surrounding by majestic temples offered a variety of hiking for all seasons and different sizes of some of the best Onsen ryokans (hot spring hotels). After a short taxi ride from the train station you will be awed by the front landscaping of this hotel. Our room is absolutely SPACIOUS for a family of 4 people with a gorgeous private garden, patio and an outdoor rocky "ONSEN BATH". We had dinner and breakfast served in room fit for ROYALTIES. Japanese best is HOSPITALITY . At this ryokan, their PROFESSIONALISM is outstanding. I still think English is not their forte, it's much preferable you have a Japanese speaker.

  An unbeatable experience!

  I stayed here for my first business trip in Japan. It was definitely an unforgetable experience. They had the western room and the Japanese room and of course I chose the Japanese room! It was my first time of sleeping on a futon and it was actually quite comfortable! If you're feeling adventurous, you should do it! The room was very spacious. It had a separate toilet and a bathroom. There was a wooden bathtub where you can take hot bath if you are too shy to take a dip in the onsen. There was also a space for sado ( tea ceremony ). Not to mention they gave you Shiseido brand for their toilettries. In the morning, the butler ( well, I got a female butler, don't know what's that called in Japanese ) came to my room to escort me to a private dining hall. Yes, I said PRIVATE. The breakfast was served and it was AMAZING! It didn't just stopped there... they opened the door right in front of where I sat, and lo and behold, my own private garden. I also had dinner in the hotel and it was also superb. It was spring, so everything was in the theme of "sakura". It was my first time eating the real Japanese wagyu, and I now understand why Japanese described their wagyu as 'melting'. That's how amazing the beef was! If you have the chance and the money, definitely stay here, at least for a night!

  Living on its Laurels?

  Tendoso has received very high ratings from guests and even had ex-US President Jimmy Carter as a guest (a signed letter from Carter is framed and mounted). For the price we paid, the room was very small -- adequate, but small. We had paid less at other ryokans in the luxury class and enjoyed immense rooms. Tendoso has small, but very clean, rooms. The bathroom in Tendoso was good sized and the private bath was spacious -- excellent for two people. The food quality was absolutely top grade, but the drinks were expensive. We ended up buying our drinks from a local store and drinking them with our dinner -- no reason to spend 5x or more for a good bottle. The waitress immediately saw our discomfort in sitting on the floor, and quickly arranged a folding table to allow us more comfort while we ate -- now that is service! Besides being small for the price, we were unhappy that amenities served at similar establishments were not offered at Tendoso. For example, most of the ryokan in which we have stayed serve a complementary glass of umeshu (plum wine) with dinner. None was offered at Tendoso. Similarly, I enjoy good coffee with my breakfast. Most luxury ryokan will provide me with a pot of hot coffee at breakfast -- not so at Tendoso: I received my pot but was charged JPY2,500 per pot! I suppose that would have been okay, had it been disclosed. Rather, it was a shock at checkout. Finally, many ryokan serve too much rice with dinner, but most ryokan are willing to use the excess rice to make onigiri so that guests have a rice ball for lunch the next day. Tendoso used the excess rice to make us onigiri, but charged us for eating our own leftovers!! Word to the wise -- always ask if there is an extra charge for what you request.
